I suspect bad sectors on the drive and wonder if that might be the cause also. I have had a number of corrupted profiles requiring a profile restore in the registry as well, but they predate the hotswap and go back to the start of the year. The 7601 problem seemed to start a month or two after that and I wonder if that's the cause. It's called but it's a feature of Windows designed to minimise problems when hot-swapping. I used the prescribed method of essentially disconnecting all of my drivers and putting Windows in to a sort of sleep mode before swapping. I recently did a hot-swap of my HD from the previously mentioned Compaq Presario into a new machine. Obviously, I can't check for updates now because Win7 thinks it's not genuine. When I last got the license to register correctly, I checked for Windows updates but my Windows updater told me that there were no updates available and that my Win7 was completely up to date. Anyway, this is all treating the symptom, not the cause.
#Windows build 7601 fix how to
I then discovered a tutorial that showed me how to reset the reg key to allow the REARM to work again. That worked for the first three times that my copy flaked out but of course then stopped.

I did find online a tutorial that showed me how to run the SLMGR -REARM in the DOS prompt window. One linked to a Microsoft patch that no longer exists. They mention uninstalling an update then advise against it. I have read other threads on this topic and they all seem to contradict each other and also seem to be quite old. The sticker on top that included the serial product key. It came pre-installed on a Compaq Presario that I bought from TESCO several years ago and up until about a month ago has never thrown up the 'not genuine' screen. I have absolutely no reason to believe that my copy of Win7 is not genuine. My copy of Windows 7 seems to think it's not genuine. Like a lot of folks, I seem to have contracted the Build 7601 problem.
